Summer Fruit
Materials: Paper, watercolor, watercolor pencil
Dimensions: 9” x 12”
The assignment was to illustrate a summer fruit, and we had a choice of mango, papaya, and pineapple and coconut. But I chose watermelon since it’s my favorite fruit. I first started off with pencil to create a composition with a large full watermelon in the background. I originally thought of drawing just one full watermelon but decided to add slices of watermelon in front of it to add dimensions and more color that is distinctly watermelon. Then I added a bottle of Tajín because I had recently had this sweet salty combination in Palm Springs that I enjoyed so much by the pool. I used watercolor and added details and highlights with water color pencils. I enjoy working with watercolor and I lot of my work consists of watercolor medium because I find it very flexible to work with to blend colors, that can create dimension to the art work. I started off with one color base for each item, and added layers of colors which made it more realistic.

For the background I started off with just blue but by adding subtle green in the background almost made it look like light is reflecting off from the objects.
